What is a staircase? It is a tool, a path, a form, a function, even a symbol. They connect two points in space, yet the staircases from the STEPS collection can move from space to space, unattached to a wall structure. The pieces are free. It does not matter if they lead nowhere because they function when people sit on them, look at them, move them and think about them. The STEPS collection was initially designed as the means to be free from furniture making. Valentin Loellmann's works had always contained elements that went beyond furniture making, but the STEPS collection goes a step further. It stretches the very boundaries between art and design.
For this piece, Valentin Loellmann explained himself. "This work connects two steps together and is built as a bridge."
