Inspired by biophilic design (the reintegration of nature into living spaces through architecture and interior design), London-based designer Shannon Clegg creates poetic botanical sculptures made entirely of fresh flowers, such as Statice and Kangaroo Paws.
Born in South Africa, she grew up surrounded by the flora of Table Mountain in Cape Town. After a brief stint in the fashion industry, whose ethics did not match her principles, she went on studying a BA in Contemporary Crafts at Falmouth University in Cornwall and MA in Product and Furniture Design at Kingston University in London.
Looking to reimagine the crafting process of 2D flower pressing, she has investigated the making of various traditional ceramic and millinery molds. She then developed a unique hand-molding technique to form and press real plant material three-dimensionally, resulting in her vase-like floral sculptures.
She has exhibited internationally and has recently been featured in INTERNI, FAIRE, Homes & Gardens, Colossal, and Gardens Illustrated magazines.
